The planning has already begun. Last year, a leprechaun invaded our house on St. Patrick’s Day, and I’ve heard whisperings that he’s been plotting this year’s visit. Making his job a bit easier was the dollar aisle at Target about a month ago (!!! They are on to Easter stuff now, but I DID just see chocolate gold coins at Party City the other day). There he found not only the much-coveted chocolate coins, but also some cute socks, in three different designs, with shamrocks & rainbows & pots of gold. I hear that he plans to separate the pairs and add them to the general mess he makes on his path through the house.

You may not know this, but leprechauns only visit homes where all the kids are wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day. Of course I wouldn’t our house to be skipped by that mischievous fellow, so I’ve already planned the kids’ wardrobes for that day. In fact, the day I bought Leah the bright green shirt from The Children’s Place – sometime last spring, I’m sure – I knew she would wear it on March 17th, 2011. The boys have matching green & gray striped shirts that will be perfect. (They wore those same shirts on the way TO and FROM Arizona recently. I figured if one got lost, we could point to the other and say, “He’s wearing THAT.” And what baby-snatcher would take one of matched set?)

I am hosting a St. Patrick’s Day craft for my MOMS Club Monday morning. We will have a simple craft, and then hopefully get to sample a variety of green fruits & veggies before having our green snack. And what will that snack be, you ask?

Striped Jello Jigglers! I found the recipe here, originally for Valentine’s Day. But that holiday crept by before I knew it, so I changed the flavors for St. Patty’s. Of course, THIS year I actually have the right amount of jello to make all the green layers the same flavor. Might be an improvement, ya think?!
We are also going to make these cookies. Because mint chocolate is pretty much Aaron’s favorite flavor combination, I was already planning on making them at some point. But the timing is just perfect to make them for the party, and I’ll stash away a few for the man of the house to make sure he gets a taste.

Do you have any special St. Patrick’s Day traditions at your house? I don’t make a special meal or anything, since that’s not really my area of interest. But Leah doesn’t have school that day, so maybe we could make something fun. Suggestions?
Does your family have any minor-holiday traditions? (I’m talking all of them except Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.)
